Thomas Jefferson of Virginia was the first president to be inaugurated in Washington, D.C. He wrote two of the most important documents in the history of the U.S.: The Delcaration of Independence and the basis for the first amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion and worship. Although he was not a great public speaker, his eloquent and powerful words carried a strong, but silent voice. He was a lover of books and his book collection, (over 6,000 books)helped to start the Library of Congress. He served for forty years in many different aspects.
