Global warming is proceeding. It is melting ice caps and raising sea levels. The permafrost is also warming releasing methane which will accelerate warming. The consequences will be inundation of river deltas and flooding. This will affect the poorest populations of the poorest countries first - displacing billions as refugees. If the warming of the oceans is sufficient the methane clathrates will sublimate and release more methane accelerating warming further. Displaced hungry people will seek to survive by invading others where they see hope. The severity of the social disruption depends on amelioration of warming.This novel is set in a world where warming proceeds uncontrolled and raises sea levels 70-80 metres above current levels.Do humans have the capacity to rebuild? What would happen if they discover a secret cache of university library books that were not pulped when everything was transferred to electronic media, how will they live without the technology developed over the last 1000 years?
