There comes a time for most individuals when we weighour assets and concerns, and decide where to focus ourfuture efforts. Billy Hawkins, however, has two assets thatmany would consider liabilitiesa degree of moral flexibilityand a borderline psychotic drive to protect the vulnerable. Ashe enters college, Billy finds himself enraged by the increasingreports of sexual abuse by Catholic Priests. He finds mostdisturbing the Priests betrayal of children and adolescentsin their charge. After making a radical change of academic pursuits ingraduate school, Billy strikes an alliance with the directorof a Catholic seminary in southern California. MonsignorMontalvo has been running his own crusade to encouragethe Church to mend its ways, but with little success. The paceof Necessary Evil accelerates as the activities of Billy andMontalvo combine to provide an unmistakable message tothe Church regarding its sanctioned abuse of the young.
