Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. I Should, therefore, feel very grateful if a copy, or the original, of all the interesting letters written by my father could be sent to me by the recipients for reproduction among other material which I may think of publishing hereafter. It will be understood that all those who so desire shall have the original letters returned to them. In conclusion, I would mention that I have ventured to record in this volume my own observations and remarks, which I have thought would be interesting, not only to those who were intimately associated with my late father, but also to those who knew him simply by repute.
