My great-grandfather was born at Culmstock, Devon; he was a wool-comber, a business of some importance in his time. He died at a good old age in 1790.<br><br>My grandfather was born in 1756, and spent the early years of his life in Culmstock. He followed the same business as his father. He removed from Culmstock to North Tawton, where he married. He died in May, 1819, aged sixty-three.<br><br>My father was born at North Tawton in 1789. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to the trade of tanner and currier at Crediton, and at the age of twenty-two years he removed to Totnes, where he was married on April 6th, 1812.<br><br>My mother was a native of Harberton, a village near Totnes; her parents were attached members of the Church of England, and were much esteemed by the inhabitants. Her maiden name was Bartlett.
