Annotation

Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. It was a generous act of Lord Palmerston, who organized the expedition, to allow two foreign gentlemen to join it ia stead of one. A sailor was besides attached to it; and a boat was also provided, in order to give full s00pe to the object of exploration. The choice of the sailor was unfortunate, and Mr. Richardson thought it best to send him back from Murzuk but the boat, which was carried throughout the difficult and circuitous road by Murzuk, Ghat, Air, and Zinder, exciting the wonder and astonishment of all the tribes in the interior, ultimately reached its destination, though the director of the expedition himself had in the meanwhile unfortunately succumbed.
