Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The verses in this little book make no preten sions to literary merit. If they are amusing and timely, they serve their end. A large number of newspaper rhymes, below the average maintained by these selections, have been read and discarded. The amount of more or less meritorious verse inspired by this everywhere-popular pastime, is very extensive. If anything of real excellence has been overlooked, no one can regret the fact more than the compiler.
