Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The notes accompanying the following selection of French Nursery Rhymes are only intended to explain such words and phrases as are not likely to be clearly understood by children. Philological and other notes, fully entering into the origin and purpose of each particular rhyme, and offering a key to all obsolete words or provincialisms, would have been out of place in a book of such an unpretending character as the present. Students or lovers of this branch of juvenile poetry are referred to the labours of Messrs.
