Annotation
Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The people of these four groups have not progressed equally since their separation. Speaking generally, it may be said that, proceeding from west to east, we find a gradual advance in civilization; the Tshi-speaking peoples being the least, and the Yoruba-speaking peeples the most, advanced. How far this may be due to local conditions and surrounding, I do not pretend to say.
