Annotation
Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The mediaeval schoolmen were, no doubt, honestly of opinion that the Analytics of Aris totle was the instrument or organon of truth. But from the time that Bacon brought out his new Organum, the Old logic began gradually to fall year by year more into disfavour. It was seen that no new truth could be gained by means of the old logic, the conclusion of every syllogism being in fact contained in the premisses, and therefore no advance could be made beyond those premisses. And although it has been many years before this was openly put into words and taught, yet the practical effects resulting from a study of the Inductive Sciences were seen to be so much more than anything that could arise from the study of the Old logic, that the latter became at length almost discontinued to give way to its rival.
