Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. There are more ways than one of seeing a fresh country. One may make a lightning tour through some of the chief towns, race through the picture galleries, and glance at the buildings of interest. The traveller does not learn very much 'of the country and the people by flying along the beaten track and staying in conventional tourist hotels. When I wander, at home or abroad, I choose for preference a cross-country line. The hills, the rivers, and the forests, appeal to me quite as powerfully as the cities, cathedrals, and works made by hands. With the rustic person every where I have a sympathy. I love the open air and those who dwell where there is calm and breathing-space.
