Annotation

"Peace They Say" examines the controversial history of the world's most famous prize and asks: Just how do we define peace, anyway? In this enlightening book, journalist Jay Nordlinger tells the controversial history of the world's most famous and problematic award. First awarded in 1901, the Nobel Peace Prize has contended with all of the key issues of the age, from the first and second world wars, through the cold war, to the war against terror, and more. The more-than 120 laureates have included historic statesmen, such as Teddy Roosevelt and Nelson Mandela; heroes or saints, such as Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa; and controversial figures such as Yasser Arafat. Yet possibly no figure is more interesting than a non-laureate: Alfred Nobel, the Swedish scientist and entrepreneur who started the prizes. The book also reflects on some of the many people who did not win the peace prize, but might have, or should have - most notably Mahatma Gandhi.
