In The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962), Thomas S Kuhn tried to break free from the traditional view of scientific discovery as resulting from the heroic achievements of the great men of science. Kuhn announced a "historiographic revolution", arguing that the history of science was not merely the story of a steadily accumulating body of facts, but a complex activity embedded in a historical, social and philosophical context. In his latest book, the astrophysicist and prolific science writer John Gribbin rejects Kuhn's view and reverts to exploring the progress of science through the lives of scientists. He admits that such an "old-fashioned" approach will be unpopular among "professional historians", but argues that "the two keys to scientific progress are the personal touch and building gradually on what has gone before. Science is made by people, not people by science." His journey through the history of science begins in 1543, the publication date of two seminal texts: Vesalius's On the Structure of the Human Body and Copernicus's On the Revolutions of Celestial Bodies. Both works radically transformed our view of ourselves and our place in the universe: they caused (to use Kuhn's apt phrase) a paradigm shift in our understanding of the world. From the origins of western science in the Renaissance, Gribbin plots his course for the present day, traveling via the Newtonian and Darwinian revolutions, astronomy, chemistry, geology, and atomic theory, before arriving in the modern era with the New Physics, genetics and the Big Bang. While being rather unadventurous in exploring individual psychology of his heroes and heroines, Gribbin excels at making complex science intelligible to the general reader. His chapter on atoms and molecules is a model of clarity. Similarly, his account of Faraday's ground-breaking exploration of electricity is charged with the excitement of discovery. Gribbin has a real passion for his subject, and is at his best describing the development of physics. If you're looking for a book that captures the personal drama and achievement of science, then look no further.

As president of Czechoslovakia and of the nascent Czech Republic, playwright-turned-statesman Havel led central Europe out of communism and into the twenty-first century before stepping down in 2003. With this book, Havel reflects upon his 14 years at Prague Castle but resists the constraints of a traditional memoir, instead combining retrospective commentary with excerpts from memos written to his staff while in office. Although fragmentary and offered with minimal context, these excerpts provide a diarylike glimpse into a leader simultaneously confronting challenges both major (Havel's struggle against so-called Mafia capitalism) and mundane (Havel's struggle to master his own computer system). Besides providing insightful, gently ironic commentary on the rigors of democratic leadership, Havel's unconventional narrative form also highlights his personality--his struggles with writing, his fondness for smokers, and his admiration for Madeleine Albright--somewhat above his significant personal achievements. He also weighs in on current events, including the Iraq War and the obstacles to complete European unification. The net result is a fresh and intimate self-portrait.

Hari Kunzru vzbudil v poslední době pozornost britského tisku, když odmítl převzít Cenu Johna Llevelyna, již sponzoruje list Daily Mail – údajně proto, že redakční politika novin je rasistická, nebo přinejmenším negativně zaměřená proti imigrantům a osobám asijského původu. Zda šlo jen o mediální tah před vydáním druhého Kunzruova románu, anebo to bylo vyjádření autorova skutečného názoru, to těžko soudit – nicméně jisté je, že cenu si zasloužil. Hari Kunzru působil původně jako žurnalista, do středu pozornosti literárních publicistů se dostal teprve tehdy, když nakladatelství Hamish Hamilton oznámilo (další mediální tah) výši zálohy, kterou autorovi vyplatilo za jeho debut Impresionista (kolem 800.000 liber). Bohužel, právě předčasná publicita – stejně jako v případě Monicy Aliové, Adama Thirwella nebo Zadie Smithové – se ukázala být dvojsečnou zbraní: na jedné straně přilákala pozornost čtenářů i kritiků ještě dlouho předtím, než se skutečně objevila na pultech, na straně druhé však zvýšila očekávání, které vzhledem k obrovské publicitě román nikdy nemohl naplnit. Nuže, nenaplnil - stejně jako všechny podobné případy před ním. Že nezapadl, za to vděčí jen a jen svým literárním kvalitám. Impresionista sympaticky ignoruje módní trendy a vrací se zpět k žánru, který v posledních desetiletích není zrovna vyhledávaný, totiž k pikaresknímu románu. Hlavní hrdina jménem Pran je zplozen v Indii anglickým cestujícím těsně předtím, než tento turista zahyne při povodni. Pranova pološílená matka je pak provdána za příslušníka vysoké kasty, který se dlouhou dobu domnívá, že dítě je skutečně jeho – a teprve na smrtelném loži (vlastně ve smrtelné vaně) se dozvídá pravdu, již mu prozradila služebná, která se chtěla Pranovi pomstít. Tak začínají Pranovy trampoty – v Indii krátce po první světové válce je využíván a zneužíván domorodými kuplíři, politickými intrikány a homosexuálním zoufalým příslušníkem britské koloniální správy, až se mu nakonec podaří uprchnout a dokonce se dostat do Anglie. Jeho osud tak opisuje oblouk – od fanaticky úzkostlivého příslušníka prestižní kasty přes naprostého vyvrhele, žebráka, prostituta až po anglického gentlemana se změněnou identitou. Tím však Pranovy trampoty nekončí... Kunzruovi se podařilo naservírovat úžasný koktejl namíchaný z těch nejvybranějších ingrediencí: zajímavý příběh, který si čtenáře záhy podmaní, velmi přesvědčivé zachycení reality meziválečné, stále ještě koloniální Indie, které se inspiruje četnými literárními prameny (a zároveň je trochu paroduje), a v neposlední řadě vytříbený smysl pro humor. I při skoro pěti set stranách je Impresionista velice čtivá, vtipná a zajímavá kniha. Hari Kunzru sice nenapsal nejlepší román posledního století – jak možná někteří mohli doufat na základě ohromné publicity – nicméně se mu podařilo vytvořit velmi vydařené dílo. --- převzato z www.iliteratura.cz

When the Bar-B-Chew Barn sets up a local Swat team to hunt him down, all his mother can do is eat Barn's Chik'n'Mix and pray for a side-by-side fridge (special edition, almond shade). So he decides to flee to Mexico, dreaming of a bungalow on the beach, just like in the movies. But nothing works well for little Little, he’s betrayed, tried and sentenced to death. The ending of Vernon God Little is too good to reveal. Find out yourself.
